Are Drugs Effective Treatment for Horses With Acute Laminitis?
نویسنده
چکیده
Currently, the only therapy for horses with acute laminitis for which there is consensus among practitioners is aggressive treatment for the disease process that has initiated laminitis. Although other treatments may have merit and seem logical based on studies of the pathogenesis of laminitis, the efficacy of these treatments has not been proven. Some of the confusion regarding treatment of horses for laminitis is the result of differing theories regarding the pathogenesis of laminitis and failure of clinicians to distinguish between recommendations made for treatment during the developmental (prodromal) stages (i.e., before signs of foot pain are observed) and recommendations for treatment during the acute phase (i.e., when signs of foot pain are apparent). Controlled studies have not shown the efficacy of any drug for treating horses in the acute phase of laminitis. Using the Horse Grimace Scale (HGS) to Assess Pain Associated with Acute Laminitis in Horses (Equus caballus)
Acute laminitis is a common equine disease characterized by intense foot pain, both acutely and chronically. The Obel grading system is the most widely accepted method for describing the severity of laminitis by equine practitioners, however this method requires movement (walk and trot) of the horse, causing further intense pain. The recently developed Horse Grimace Scale (HGS), a facial-expres...
متن کاملComparison of first and second acupuncture treatments in horses with chronic laminitis
Background: Laminitis is a common but critical disease that causes severe pain and disability in horses. The etiology and pathogenesis of laminitis remain inconclusive and a multimodal therapeutic approach is generally indicated. Acupuncture has been used as a treatment option; however, the required number of treatments is still controversial due to the lack of objective scient...
متن کاملEquine laminitis model: cryotherapy reduces the severity of lesions evaluated seven days after induction with oligofructose.
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY A previous preliminary study demonstrated the potential of distal limb cryotherapy (DLC) for preventing laminitis. Clinically, DLC must be effective for periods longer than 48 h and the preventive effect must extend beyond its discontinuation. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of DLC, applied during the developmental phase of induced laminitis, on the severity of ...
متن کاملA Review of the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Acute Laminitis: Pathophsiologic and Therapeutic Implications of Endothelin-1
The pathophysiology of acute laminitis remains poorly understood despite substantial scientific investigation over the last 20 yr. Evidence would suggest that ischemic and inflammatory cascades are involved. Evidence from our laboratory suggests that endothelin-1 is involved in the digital microvascular alterations characteristic of acute laminitis. Although current therapies are varied and inc...
متن کاملDistribution of technetium-99m PEG-liposomes during oligofructose-induced laminitis development in horses.
Liposomes are phospholipid nanoparticles used for targeted drug delivery. This study aimed to determine whether intravenous liposomes accumulate in lamellar tissue during laminitis development in horses so as to assess their potential for targeted lamellar drug delivery. Polyethylene-glycol (PEG) coated liposomes were prepared according to the film hydration method and labelled using (99m)Tc-he...
